Ski-Free shrine, funniest Pac-Man chase, Street Fighter 4 out for iPhone, and the decline of Donkey Kong

Alrighty, I’m a keeping this one short, as I’ve got to head off to this event in the city of Adelaide tonight. Which is a workshop for circuit bending portable consoles/toys. Hosted by local Chiptune artist Little-Scale. I’ll try to post up pictures through the evening as well :)

Street Fighter IV is finally out for the iPhone. Looking forward to trying that one out, might need a 3GS however.

To those of you who were lucky to go through the right era of PC-gaming (1994-2000), chances are you would have had Windows 3.X at some point.. Do you folks remember this game?

Well this website is dedicated to this free classic title. There’s talks on there about them making an iPhone version as well. Brilliant!

There’s quite a depressing article on Wiipotato.com, talking about the decline of the Donkey Kong franchise. Covering a lot about about it’s more successful eras (the beginning, and Donkey Kong Country naturally).

I haven’t had the privilege to play any of the recent Donkey Kong titles, but I figured once Rare has stopped any involvement with the series, that the games would turn into tripe. I’ve been told that was the case (not my opinion).

Finally I leave you folks with a hilarious Pac-Man chase from none other than France’s favourite guerilla prankster/ex Pro Soccer player, Remi Gaillard:

Alrighty, I’ll hopefully get some decent shots from tonight’s workshop and DJ set as well. Should be an interesting evening!

Video game droids, Why is retrogaming all the rage?, Pac-Man cereal, and Metroid Cocktails!

Yes.. So after discussing on Facebook with some of the great fans there, Facebook fan Adrian emailed me mentioning this website, called Import Monster. They get stuff for you from Japan’s Yahoo Auctions, and other sources.

And we all know how stressful it can be to try and win something from auctions, why not resort to drinking? In particular this beverage:

Yummy! Here’s what is in it. Local (as in here in Adelaide, Australia) blogger Ben has posted up an interesting post on his website covering The worst Nintendo games made. Sorry but I have to agree with Wayne’s World.. I guess that’s back in the days when THQ weren’t able to make decent games for the SNES.

In the business of making NES and SNES games? Then you might be interested in this site. Full of spare parts/pieces for putting together cartridges,

If it’s morning where you are, you might be having breakfast now.. If only they were still selling this:

As many of you feel and realise, that retro gaming is back, and in full force! I mean why would companies remake classics like Tecmo Super Bowl for the Xbox Live Arcade for example?

OH YEAH That’s right! Tecmo Super Bowl REMAKE! Either way, this article should explain in four good reasons why retro-gaming is all the rage! But we don’t need to explain to you folks as to why ;)

Finally we find that this is the droid I’ve been looking for… Thanks Facebook fan Nik for the find ;) Okay… *squinting* That thing has.. a Playstation, Mega Drive, SNES, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and of course the NES.

New AVGN, Mario Amigurumi, SEGA addon-overkill and Donkey Kong style shelf

We hope you folks are having a great weekend so far. Onto today’s posts:

As most of you who are retro-gamers, would know that the new Angry Video Game Nerd is out, this time covering the Pong consoles. Fascinating stuff, I need to find a solid pong-playing device one day…

This is adorable, somebody made a Mario Amigurumi doll. For those who don’t know, Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting dolls.

Although this monstrosity (besides the Mega Drive) has a lot to explain. Not so much needs explanation on what’s happening here:

Don’t be surprised if I get that kind of shelf at my place! But you won’t catch me ever wearing this though, that’ll be for the wife! :)

Have a great rest of the weekend (and if you live in South Australia, then have a great long weekend!) Tune in tomorrow evening for more Retrospekt!

Cute Hedgehog T-shirt, Atari Games at Taco Bell, Nethack “remake”?, and retro characters in new SEGA game!

Well I’m tempted to get this device actually, props to Paul for submitting the review for us so promptly! He only got that thing in the mail yesterday!

So I was reading up the other day about this new game that SEGA released, called Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, which fascinates me due to the amount of characters in the game, especially the fact they went into detail to include the likes of Alex Kidd and the Bonanza Brothers! But where is Bin and Pin from Dynamite Dux? :(

Probably just as well as the main character from Altered Beast isn’t in it, right?

Who here has or is still playing Nethack? Then you might be in luck, as I think this is meant to be a remake of that game, free to download for OSX, Windows and Linux! Here’s some game footage:

Oh and it’s free!

Taco Bell in the states have a promotion where you buy a meal, and then get an Atari game at a price

Although I think that top left one isn’t meant to be Breakout.. Oh well! Still pretty cool, and they’re flash-based on CD.

Although I’d be pissed if I get any salsa allover this shirt..

Okay folks, I hope you have a great long weekend (if you live in South Australia), get a couple of hours in to play some video games, as it looks like the weather may not be on our side!

Ranma 1/2 Reviewed for SNES, Sad Story about a SNES, Mushroom Quilt, and Fan-based Kings Quest sequel got canned.

I hope you folks enjoyed today’s great review of Ranma 1/2: Super Battle for the SNES submitted by Paul. I just want to start today’s post with a bit of an emotional post I saw from FuckYeaNintendo. It was about a child who grew up and had a SNES to remind him of the better times of his life. I warn you, it is quite depressing, and very touching.

Click to enlarge (it’s worth it)

Seeing something like that makes you want to curl up under a quilt and play the SNES right? Perhaps with THIS quilt instead?

Wrap up in one of those for winter whilst playing games ^_^ Good times, goood times.. Not so good times for an independent games company who made a fan-based sequel to the 1998 release of Kings Quest 8! Slashdot reports that  the company Silver Lining were told by Activision (after buying out Vivendi Games, which bought out Sierra) to cease and desist production of the sequel. The entire blurb as to what happened is on their website.

Finally, since it’s a Monday, we have some music to share with you folks, this time it’s from Atarimusic.net, in particular the artist Army of 2600. Quite an abrasive electronic/Industrial feel to the sound. Very cool! Here’s an example

Jousting Time (MP3)

That’s it for today folks! Tune in tomorrow for more findings around the world wide web of wacky Retrogaming news and articles!

Best Alex Kidd game ever? Street Fighter 4, NBA Jam remake, and Dark Side of the Moon Link

Props to Mel for dropping such an awesome review for what I even consider an awesome game for the SEGA Master System and to do it on her birthday too ^_^ CHEERS!

Okay onto today’s post, I was hesitant of discussing this in a retrogaming site, but this game oozes of traditionalism when it comes to the Street Fighter series which we’ve grown up to love and be inspired from. Super Street Fighter 4 is coming out on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in April which will include additional characters (some old, some new). I’ll no doubt be hanging for that one, perhaps in the meantime I might grab it on the iPhone if it comes out sooner.

Yup. Yup yupyup yup! I’m glad to see that both titles are coming out, as opposed to a remake of NBA Jam which got a minor mention then the announcement was removed all of a sudden.. Word has it that it may still come out for the Wii, but not so much for the 360 or PS3.

A classic title from Midway no doubt. I mean who in the 90’s DIDN’T play that in the arcades or any of the 16 bit consoles? Same goes with the first 3 Mortal Kombat games too, this artwork proves that point that a classic mashed up with a classic CAN work!

Nice work Frank Turner!

Who here fancies an alcoholic beverage? OF course! Well how many like it when playing a video game? If so, then THIS tumblelog is for you! Anything to do with gaming (OLD and new) and drinking!

Finally this amazing desktop wallpaper from Deviantart artist ~NES—still-the-best. Mixing classic music with a classic game moment. Nice work!

Weekend edition: Mario Land 2 review for Game Boy, Pac-Man Scarf and a Tetris loveheart tattoo!

Source

Hope everybody’s been having a good weekend so far! Etsy.com once again has another great item for sale, this time being a Pac-Man Scarf:

I was told that I should get this as a tattoo, I’m not too sure personally, like for myself. But yeah that is one badass Tetris tattoo!

What is also pretty badass is the latest review submitted by our resident writer Paul, this time covering Super Mario Land 2 for the Game Boy.

Have a great evening, we’ll see you all tomorrow!

An Angry Nerd, King of Kong Winner reclaimed, Retro shirts and phone cases, and 70’s Afro Muscle Cars!

Source

I’d love to know who the band is there, but I saw that today and thought that’s just full of awesome!

UPDATE: yeah I DO notice the Xbox 360 controller in Reptile’s hand, no need to tell me :P

Okay onto the news..

Last night a new Angry Video Game Nerd was released, talking about the Swordquest games on the Atari 2600, check it out HERE!

Onto other announcements, how many of you have watched the documentary King of Kong? You know, the story of two champions fighting for the world top score of Donkey Kong on the arcade? Well.. Steve Weibe has finally reclaimed the world record, proof is on Twingalaxies.com. I don’t know, perhaps Steve should be wearing THIS T-shirt instead?

Okay one would ask what game uses a Player 1 Joystick and a Player 2 Button, right? Either way, yet another brilliant shirt from Threadless.com.

Speaking of custom-made stuff, Michael Tesch has submitted his artwork on Infectious.com which is a skin of a NES controller for an iPhone or iPod.

Finally GOG.com has announced this morning that Interstate 76 is re-released for Windows XP/Vista/7 so what are you waiting for? GO TO THE SITE NOW! Or are you waiting for us to review it? Keep on them Facebook, Twitter or RSS feeds to stay up to date with Retrospekt :D Have a great weekend everybody!

Sonic 4 “leaked” Video, Neo Geo Love, Custom Game Boys, and kickass Earthworm Jim Posters

We got a lot to cover today, so lets get to it! Joystiq.com has gotten hold of a screenshot and a leaked video of Sonic 4:

I can’t wait for this, and yeah most likely will get this for the 360 on XBLA! As we talk about a retro-feeling title for a new-gen console, we better mention a new game on an old-gen console as spotted on Kotaku (Thanks Facebook fan Nik Newland), called Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril, by Sivak Games for the NES and here’s a video of the trailer:

Looks like a lot of fun, fresh looking retro platformer for sure, speaking of platformers, the artist Frenden made a great illustration/poster of Earthworm Jim and Psycrow. Check it out:

Very funky, kind of like this custom-made Game Boy made for Chiptune band Anamanaguchi, designed by Thretris.

Be sure to check out Anamanaguchi’s work as well HERE. Whilst on the topic of music, Facebook fan Adrian Ilsey has spotted this on Screwattack, a music video singing about Neo Geo arcade machines!

Thanks for that! :D Also my good friend Rachel Carger has spotted these cute Mushroom keychains on Dealextreme.

Props to everyone who have stumbled across these items, see you folks tomorrow!

Happy 20th Mario 3, Mario Paint music composer, local retrogaming stores and Super Play!

To start off today, I’d like to mention Paul’s review he did for Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles on the Amstrad CPC. Hell even I learnt something there :D Great post!

I don’t know about you folks, but to me, personally music plays a large role in the games we play, be it old and new, but of course we’re talking about the old.  Raise of hands for those that had a SNES, right, lots of you, keep’em up if you had Mario Paint.. okay not so many hands then? Well for those that were lucky to have experienced it, by renting it or owning it would remember the music making part of it.

That of course is the Dr Wily Stage 1 music from Mega Man 2 done not with Mario Paint, but a program made for OSX and Windows to let you create the same tunes with the same style of sound in it. Available as a free download HERE.

One of our correspondents for Melbourne went on a mission to check out a store in Elizabeth Street called Dungeon Crawl.

Half of what they have in stock are PC games, as for console gear, most of it is modern as well. They do however have a handful of PS and N64 titles, so if you’re a fan of both consoles, and live in Melbourne? Check it out. That’s if you don’t live near any Gametraders stores that is.

Speaking about stores, if you live in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, be sure to drop on down to

Games 4 All
847 Main North Rd, Pooraka.
PH: 0414 616 815
Email: darrenmt68@yahoo.com.au

Superb selection of games/consoles, a lot of stuff boxed as well. Be sure to drop by if you’re in the area!

Speaking about collectibles, I won a bid on eBay for this magazine:

So happy I got it at last. Folks this was a great magazine from the SNES era, also the artwork of the featured game were anime versions of the characters! Very cool stuff!!

I’ll finish today’s post with an article from Gamesradar.com on Super Mario Bros. 3 considering it’s been 20 years since it came out. Gee time flies when we all have fun gaming!

Pilotwings, Sonic 4 announced, Sonic 1-3 for DS, Activision on GOG, and Giana Sisters on DS!

Whew, late night shopping, fun stuff! I went to Gametraders Marion to score a few new games (Yes some of us are still current-gen gamers as well as retrogamers), like Mass Effect 1, and Bayonetta. But also scored Pilotwings for the SNES!

Folks take my advice, when shopping for old games at stores, it’s a hit and miss due to the fact that the carts may not work. But don’t fret! A clean-up on the pins and you’re good to go!

Although I luckily didn’t need to clean the pins on this one…

Okay, lets move onto today’s stories.. How can we not mention the recently-announced Sonic 4? It will be an episodic 2D game, yep that’s right, 2D! SEGA have gone for the classic style for this one, also I should mention that it will be a true sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sonic 4 will be available around April-June (Summer in the US) on XBLA, WiiWare, PSN, and there are hints of it coming out on the iPhone as well! Time will tell folks :D

To tie things in until that comes out, another announcement made late last year, that the Sonic Classic Collection is (by now) out for the DS. Containing the first 3 Sonic titles (for the Mega Drive/Genesis no doubt), as well as Sonic & Knuckles.

I take it you folks have visited and even purchased some great tiles from GOG.com? Good Old Games. They deliver classic DOS/Windows titles to work on current versions of Windows (XP/Vista/7).

Well recently they’ve made an alliance with Activision to re-release a fair few classic titles, oh stuff like Vampire: The Masquerade: Redemption. I cross my fingers in hope that they release Interstate 76 for it. Come on! Mechwarrior 2 with afros!

Over on the behance network, there is a great collection of art being submitted, in particular this one of a concept board game based on Super Mario Bros!

Source

Finally a mate called me up today just to let me know that the C64 classic Giana Sisters is out on the Nintendo DS! So below are screenshots of the original, and then the DS version.

Tuesday 9th February 2010: Confused portable console, abrasive SNES shirts, unheard Nintendo franchises, and old modems!

Okay lets get to it, here’s a T-Shirt which really stood out for me:

It’s amazing how a controller can be so symbolic, for me personally the SNES controller stands out as a classic, I mean Nintendo wouldn’t have made a Wii peripheral based on it otherwise, right?

Moving onto a new platform building up to be on par with PSP and DS, I’m talking about the iPhone. The folks at Toucharcade have been informed that Doom II RPG has been released onto the App Store today. I’ve never played a single RPG version of any of the ID Software titles. If you folks want a review done, let us know, and we’ll get one done!

Whilst on the topic of handhelds, thegadgetsite has spotted this device. As many other news sites have stated, I agree, it seems to be confused itself on what the device’s purpose is in life.

It apparently plays GameBoy/NES ROMS as well as movies, music and .SWF files. It seems to favour Nintendo platforms a lot as the choice on what it supports, which brings to an interesting top ten article, from Joystick Division. We all know the most famous franchises from Nintendo right? You wouldn’t be a gamer or retrogamer for that matter otherwise, but what about ones which were either one-off’s or just somehow didn’t make it as a name that everyone will murmur in their sleep.. not that I do.. But how many of you actually heard of Unirally? or Odama? Click here to find out more.

Granted that article does cover a lot more of the recent-gen consoles like the GameCube, at least this next article covers something which belongs in a museum! Over to Retrothing.com, is an article about connecting a 300 baud modem from 1964 to a Linux notebook to hook it up to the Internet. Even more so the video:

And finally, to end the evening on a manic, yet funny mode, is this tumbleblog dedicated to anything and everything nintendo, mostly in pictures. Simply called FuckYeaNintendo!

No idea where these guys find most of these pictures, but they are downright hilarious and also cool in a geeky way, like here’s some examples;

Amazing. Keep playing those old games folks :) Same bat time tomorrow!
